That’s it, guys! I don’t want to say I’m done with plugins, but I definitely see it all through a different lens now. The reason is simple: the hardware does its job so well that I had a hard time even telling if it was working… until I looked at the numbers. The amount of compression the SSL (and others) applies without changing anything sonically is crazy!
With plugins, we pretty much have the opposite mentality—we want to hear the difference. So it’s a real mind-shift at first.
Another thing I have to say: it’s not nearly as expensive as I thought. They give you a free 45-second preview for each device… and to be honest—ptsss!—I wouldn’t even be telling you any of this if it weren’t for the love of music and this community.
I played with ALL of their gear for about an hour and only paid a few bucks.
And again: the gear works so differently from plugins. It’s musical. It doesn’t crush your music into something new. It enhances it.
After this first test drive, I’m thinking more about the music I’m working on than I have in years. For a long time, I was just thinking about thresholds, stereo fields, and all that…
But when you touch those knobs, you’re focused on what you’re hearing—and feeling. For real.
